Could the Bears Really Move to Indiana? Don’t Rule It Out

It may be hard to imagine the Chicago Bears playing home games in Indiana, but it looks like more and more of a possibility. 

As it stands, Kalshi’s market has a new stadium location in Illinois in the pole position, but the 43% chance of an Indiana relocation isn't nothing.

This lines up with how negotiations have gone so far, with the most recent announcement from the organization expressing their plans to move forward with a development project in Hammond, Indiana. The Bears described the project as one that could connect Northwest Indiana with Chicago’s South Side, the Loop and the broader metropolitan area, but an exact location has yet to be selected. The city of Hammond itself is about a half-hour away from Chicago.

Indiana has been aggressive in pursuing the franchise. Governor Mike Braun signed a bill giving the state a structure through which it could acquire land to finance, build, and operate a stadium near Hammond. Illinois considered legislation that could have created a similar path for an in-state project, but it failed to pass.

Illinois still has considerable advantages. The Bears already own land in Arlington Heights, Illinois, enough to build a stadium there. The city is about the same distance from Soldier Field as Hammond is, but would be a much easier sell to fans. The Bears would leave Chicago, but at least remain in the state they have called home since the franchise’s earliest days. Those factors help explain why Illinois remains the favorite, despite momentum seemingly sliding towards the Indiana move.

It should be noted, A move to Hammond wouldn't necessarily turn the team into the “Indiana Bears,” either. Nothing in the organization’s announcement indicates that a new stadium would come with a new name, colors, or uniform. In fact, the Bears framed the proposed Hammond development as part of the larger Chicagoland region. The most likely interpretation is that this would be a stadium relocation, not a franchise rebrand. This is more like the Jets and Giants playing in New Jersey than the Chargers moving from San Diego to LA. 

The Bears have yet to finalize anything, but Indiana at 43%is far too close to dismiss as just negotiating leverage anymore.
