NJ Sports Betting

From 1992 until 2018, online sports betting was effectively outlawed nationwide. The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) placed a federal prohibition on betting on every sport, with the exception of horse racing, dog racing, and jai alai.

Bettors were left out in the cold and forced to use shady offshore sportsbooks to place their wagers. That all changed when the US Supreme Court overturned PASPA in 2018. The prohibition was lifted, and New Jersey quickly acted to legalize online sports betting that summer.

NJ was first to the party and continues to be one of the best states for sports bettors. With an extremely wide variety of sportsbooks available, in addition to being home to one of America's gambling Meccas in Atlantic City, New Jersey bettors have it better than most.

Yes. After PASPA was overturned in 2018, New Jersey was the very first state to fully legalize online sports betting.

How were the New Jersey sportsbooks chosen?

All legal operating sportsbooks in New Jersey have gone through an extensive vetting and approval process.

After launching, they are regulated by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (NJDGE).

How did you rank all New Jersey sportsbooks?

There are many different criteria upon which one can judge a sportsbook. In our reviews, we make sure to highlight the following criteria:

  • Bonus Offers - How valuable is the sign up bonus? Does this sportsbook offer promotions for existing customers or neglect you once your foot's in the door? This is an opportunity to get value, so thoroughly evaluating bonus and promotional offers are very important to determine the true value of a sportsbook.
  • Betting Variety - Does a sportsbook offer advanced ways to play like Same Game Parlays? How is the live betting? Can you access an online casino from your sports betting account? A sportsbook must satisfy the needs of many different types of players to be considered elite
  • Mobile Experience - How is the sportsbook's mobile app? Is it available on iPhone and Android? Most bets are placed via a mobile device these days, so this is a major element of any sportsbook's overall experience.
  • Betting Experience - How does a sportsbook feel? Is the website or app laggy? Does it feel laggy, messy, or outdated? You want to make sure you'll actually have fun on a betting site, not frustrated by your time on the book.
  • Payment Options - How many payment options are available? How long do payouts take? Are there minimum requirements for payments and withdrawals? If you want to be secure with your hard-earned money, then this is a crucial element of any sportsbook.
  • Customer Support - If an issue arises, will you be able to easily get in contact with customer support? Is it hard to get in contact with an actual person? Hopefully, you won't need it but having a spare tire in your trunk never hurts.
