For over 25 years, the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) banned placing wagers on most sports in the States, with few exceptions. In 2018, the Supreme Court struck down that law, and each state was allowed to institute its own rules and regulations regarding online sports betting.

West Virginia was one of the first states to take advantage of this ruling and legalized online sports betting in 2018, with an official launch in 2019. While there hasn't been a total market-flooding like we've seen in other early-adopting states like New Jersey and Colorado, plenty of sportsbooks have made their presence felt in the Mountain State.
