From 1992 until 2018, The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) effectively banned placing wagers on all but a few sports
In that time, a little thing called the Internet took over the world, leading to a new marketplace for bettors. This led to the rise of offshore sites that operated in a legal gray area due to the fact that they were not technically based in the States. When the Supreme Court struck down PASPA in 2018, the door was open for states to legalize online betting.
