From 1992 until 2018, The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) effectively banned placing wagers on any sport except horseracing, dog racing, and jai alai.

This led to the rise of offshore sites that operated in a legal gray area due to the fact that they were not technically based in the States. That all changed when the US Supreme Court overturned PASPA in 2018. The prohibition was lifted, and states had the opportunity to pass legislation enabling their residents to legally bet on sports online.

In 2019, Colorado entered the fray and legalized online sports betting. Since then there has been an absolute boom, with dozens of sportsbooks flooding the market. In fact, Colorado has more sportsbooks available than any other state in the union.

12/1/25 - theScore Bet launches in Colorado as PENN's rebrand of the ESPN BET app.
7/22/25 - Hard Rock Bet is now available in Colorado after launching in anticipation of the 2025 NFL season
9/30/24 - Minor sportsbook Betsafe has officially pulled out of the Colorado market
9/23/24 - SI Sportsbook is no longer available in Colorado
9/16/24 - ClutchBet is officially shut down in the US and will no longer be accepting new players
8/15/24 - Betfred Sports announced it would be pulling out of several states, including Colorado, by the end of the year.
3/6/24 - Betting sites in Colorado claimed a record $53.5 billion in revenue in January
12/4/23 - PointsBet has now fully transitioned to Fanatics Sportsbook in Colorado, following its acquisition.
