Louisiana Sports Betting

From 1992 to 2018, the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) banned betting on most sports in the US with few exceptions. That all changed when the Supreme Court struck down that law and each state was allowed to institute its own rules and regulations regarding online sports betting.

Louisiana took its time adapting itself to legal sports betting, with voters approving a ballot measure in 2020. However, since then, over a year has passed and sports betting is only now getting off the ground. That gave time for sportsbooks to gain approval in the state and users to pre-register with their betting app of choice.

In any case, the vast majority of Louisiana now officially can legally bet on sports!

Louisiana Sports Betting Laws

Louisiana has been a bit unique in how they've structured its sports betting laws. While it has gained approval at the state level, voters from individual parish also had the chance to approve or deny the legislation at a local level.

55 out of 64 parishes voted to legalize sports betting, with Caldwell, Catahoula, Franklin, Jackson, La Salle, Sabine, Union, West Carroll, and Winn as the sole holdouts.

That means you won't be able to bet online in those parishes as sportsbooks will establish geofences. In that case, you must simply travel to a parish that does allow online sports betting to place your wagers.
