New York Mobile Sports Betting

After a long wait, mobile sports betting was finally approved by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in April 2021. While betting has yet to officially commence, there have been a total of 9 sports betting sites given the green light to open up shop in early 2022, with PointsBet, BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, FanDuel Sportsbook, DraftKings Sportsbook, WynnBET, and BetRivers available now.

Some residents of New York City will certainly already be familiar with some of the options available due to their availability across the George Washington Bridge, but now you'll have the chance to bet directly from the comfort of your own apartment or local watering hole.

How We've Evaluated Sports Betting Apps in New York

While betting is only recently available in New York, we've thoroughly evaluated each one of these sportsbooks' offerings in their active states. With few exceptions, betting apps tend to be the same from state to state for the majority of operators.

In terms of how we've rated sports betting apps in general, there are a few criteria upon which we can say that a sportsbook's mobile offering can be made or destroyed. They include:

  • Design - You're a modern bettor, you want a modern experience, right? Great sports betting apps should come with a design that is intuitive to users while maintaining a sleek look.
  • Functionality - This is the most important aspect of a sports betting app, in my opinion. You don't want a slow and laggy app to prevent you from getting in those crucial live bets.
  • Mobile Features - With so much of the action taking place on our phones, many sportsbooks have added features exclusive to their mobile app. This level of care can make an app stand out from the crowd.

For a long time, one of the most prestigious betting brands in the world was William Hill. A British bookie that dated back decades, its US efforts were acquired by casino chain Caesars. Now, that classic British charm has been intertwined with the glitz and glamour of Vegas.

One of the best products of this marriage has been the new and improved Caesars Sportsbook app. This convenient and easy-to-navigate app is shaping up to be one of New York's best sports betting apps when the big day finally arrives.

One area where Caesars has stood out has been its massive array of odds boosts. On a given day, dozens of odds boosts are readily available on the Caesars Sportsbook app. Combine this with how intuitive and easy-to-use this mobile app is and you have a great place for beginners to pick up and play.

Caesars Sportsbook has been growing more and more since the William Hill takeover, and the New York expansion promises to bring more. The Caesars Sportsbook app is available on the App Store and Google Play. It currently holds a rating of 4.6/5 on the App Store

FanDuel Sportsbook is one of the country's most popular sportsbooks for a reason - time and time again it delivers quality to its users. Perhaps the crown jewel of the FanDuel empire is the FanDuel Sportsbook App.

Combining style and substance in one package, the FanDuel Sportsbook app is easy on the eyes and is supremely intuitive to use. When you open the app, the homepage is littered with featured events for the day as well as carousels where you can find your preferred sport or league. Also available from this carousel is a slate of odds boosts that are updated on a daily basis.

Best of all - New York bettors can easily navigate to FanDuel's signature Same Game Parlay feature. So feel free to bet the Over on Julius Randle's point total in a Knicks win if you see fit (or fade your team if you're a diehard Knicks fan and know better than to get your hopes up).

All in all, the FanDuel Sportsbook app has everything a New York bettor could ask for. The FanDuel Sportsbook App is available on the App Store and Google Play. It currently holds a rating of 4.8/5 on the App Store

PointsBet is a betting site that's been shooting up the rankings in the past few years. Through major partnerships with several leagues, former players, and NBC Sports, they've aggressively marketed themselves to the forefront of the bettor's mind.

It's not just meaningless hype - PointsBet boasts one of the absolute best mobile apps for New York bettors. With both incredibly easy-to-navigate displays and features specialized for mobile sports betting, New Yorkers get a great experience.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 10/10

One feature exclusive to the PointsBet app that we love in particular is the Quick Parlay tab. Here you can filter by sport and browse the top sporting events of the day to easily combine spread, moneyline, or game total wagers. It's convenient, fun, and fast - everything you want in a sports betting app.

PointsBet's mobile offering is incredibly impressive for a relatively young platform, and we can't wait to see how it continues to grow. The PointsBet App is available on the App Store and Google Play. It currently holds a rating of 4.7/5 on the App Store

In the world of US sports betting, a couple of bookies have risen above the ranks to become the dominant brands. DraftKings Sportsbook certainly has to be counted among them as the country's most popular and widely available sportsbook.

On the mobile side, DraftKings Sportsbook more than meets the expectations that come with these lofty titles and is one of the best sportsbooks set to be available in New York on Day 1. They've taken the mobile-first approach and streamlined their betting experience to perform at its peak on iPhone and Android.

With an expansive Stats Hub, access to all the betting functions of the desktop site, and the ability to enter into pools directly from the app, DraftKings Sportsbook's New York app is well on its way to becoming the new King of New York (apologies to Biggie).

DraftKings has a massive foothold on top of the food chain, and it will be interesting to see if this holds true for the New York market. The DraftKings Sportsbook App is available on the App Store and Google Play. It currently holds a rating of 4.8/5 on the App Store

Along the same line as Caesars, Vegas superstar MGM has declared itself a contender in the world of online sports betting. After starting out on the wrong foot, BetMGM has pulled itself up by its own bootstraps to build one of New York's best sports betting apps.

BetMGM's offerings are highlighted by its mobile app available on iPhone and Android. This New York sports betting app features a super sleek design, is easy to pick up and use, and has some nice mobile features.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ 9/10

The app design is very sensical, with a carousel of different available sports up high on the homepage as well as your betslip and active wagers easily accessible on the bottom rung. We will say that we ran into some lag when we were switching through pages on this app. It's not a dealbreaker, but it is worth noting as it could cost you a live bet down the line.

All in all, the BetMGM app promises a top-flight experience for New York bettors. The BetMGM app is available on the App Store and Google Play. It currently holds a rating of 4.8/5 on the App Store

  • Google Play: Yes - 3.9/5 based on 106 reviews (NJ)

WynnBET has established itself nationwide as a very all-around solid bookmaker. There may not be a lot to blow you away, but WynnBET does a lot of the little things right in a style-over-substance manner. You can call it the Andre Iguodala of New York sports betting apps.

Presumably launching in New York soon, WynnBET is best experienced through its mobile application. Again, the WynnBET app lays the framework for the user to have a solid, if simple, sports betting experience.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ 7/10

You're greeted on the homepage by promotional opportunities as well as games that you can live bet on at the moment. One major area where we knocked the WynnBET app in our review was the fact that they offered different apps for different states. So if you live in New Jersey, but commute to New York for work or social events, you'll have to download two separate apps to keep the action alive on the go. It may seem like a minor inconvenience, but it hurts the overall experience and is a big reason why we have the WynnBET app rated near the bottom of the totem pole.

At the end of the day, the WynnBET app is a solid choice for the NY mobile sports bettor. It is available on the App Store and Google Play and currently holds a rating of 3.7/5 on the App Store

Closing out the list, we have BetRivers. While we think BetRivers is a solid sportsbook, you may have some better options available to you.

On the plus side, BetRivers has many betting features of which you can take advantage. In particular, live betting is handled particularly well. You can live stream some events, like select NHL games and the French Open directly through the BetRivers app. This is a boon for any sportsbook and shouldn't be overlooked here.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ 6/10

Unfortunately, there are also some downsides to the BetRivers mobile experience. Similar to WynnBET, you must download different apps to wager in each BetRivers state. Again, not the worst thing in the world, but still a definite minus. We also found the BetRivers app to be a bit clunky in its design and noticed a fair bit of lag. These are pretty significant demerits as they directly hinder the user experience.

New York bettors could certainly do worse than BetRivers, but it still leaves a bit to be desired. The BetRivers app is available on the App Store and Google Play. It currently holds a rating of 3.5/5 on the App Store
