When Will Sports Betting be legal in New York?

Online sports betting will is fully operational in New York as of January 8th, 2022. While the bill was signed in April 2021, the bureaucratic process to put the power in the hands of the player has been a long and arduous one.

Hold-ups have included bartering over tax rates and establishing online servers within state lines. While there still has yet to be a definitive date set, the state has announced that it hopes to host fully operational sports betting in NY by the Super Bowl, which takes place on February 13th, 2022.

They've now launched with plenty of time to ensure the kinks are ironed out of the system, and 4 sportsbooks are now operational.

New York Sports Betting Laws - 5 Key Points

College Sports Betting in New York

Similar to New Jersey, New York is placing some extra restrictions on NCAA betting within state lines. While betting on college sports will be legal, users will not be able to bet on New York colleges or universities. That means no betting on Syracuse basketball or football, whether they're playing at home or out of state.

However, you will be able to bet on college games taking place in the state of New York, assuming there is no NY-based team participating. So don't worry - you'll still be able to bet on a Villanova-UConn showdown in the East Region of the NCAA Tournament.

New York Sports Betting Registration

In order to be able to register with a sportsbook and place bets in New York, you must be physically located in the state and have an internet connection. Whatever app or site you use will require a geolocation, so your phone will need to have location services turned on and your desktop will require a geolocator plug-in that the sportsbook should provide when you sign up.

You do not have to be a resident of New York nor do you have to register in-person to start with a betting site.

During the sign up process, you'll most likely have to provide the following info:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Email address
  • Date of birth
  • Last four digits of Social Security Number

This information is used to verify that you are who you say you are and that you are legally allowed to bet on sports.

Retail Sports Betting in New York

While online sports betting in New York is just ramping up, in-person sports betting at brick-and-mortar retail sportsbooks has been active since 2019. There are currently 5 retail sportsbooks available in the state of New York. Each of them has partnered with an online sportsbook to provide odds, so you are able to use your pre-existing account withdraw, deposit, and place wagers while at your sportsbook's retail location.

The available sportsbooks right now are:

  • Del Lago Resort & Casino with DraftKings in Waterloo, NY
  • Resorts World Catskills with Bet365 in Monticello, NY
  • Rivers Casino with BetRivers in Schenectady, NY
  • Tioga Downs with FanDuel in Nichols, NY
  • Turning Stone Resort Casino with Caesars in Verona, NY

Legal New York Sports Betting Age

Once New York sports betting launches, you will be able to sign up and place wagers as long as you are at least 21 years of age or older. This is pretty standard so betting nationwide, so this rule shouldn't come as a surprise, but it's still something to keep in mind.

New York Mobile Sports Betting

When online sports betting finally arrives in New York properly, mobile sports betting will also become legal. Judging by other states that have had open sports betting for a while now, it's most likely that betting directly from an app will become the dominant way to do it. In the neighboring state, New Jersey, over 80% of all wagers are placed via a mobile device, so it's logical to assume NY will follow this trend.

All of the sports betting sites available in New York should have a mobile app available on Day 1, so you can download your selection today to make sure you're all ready to go. Make sure to check out our guide to the Best NY Mobile Sports Betting Apps before you pick.
