Brock Purdy MVP Odds: Dark Horse has Become Frontrunner

Brock Purdy is making it harder to dismiss him as a game manager or a product of Kyle Shanahan’s system. He’s producing, the 49ers keep winning, and the MVP conversation has moved well beyond whether he deserves to be included.

The season-long challenge remains the same. Purdy needs to keep San Francisco near the top of the NFC while playing well enough to separate himself from the other superstar quarterbacks. A hot September helps, but this award won’t be handed out based on five games.

Purdy’s MVP odds now sit at +280 at DraftKings Sportsbook, putting him narrowly ahead of Josh Allen as the favorite.

He’s gone from an outside possibility to the top of the board. Now comes the harder part: staying there for the remainder of the season.

Through five games, Purdy has 13 touchdown passes, two interceptions, and a 119.3 passer rating. That’s a strong foundation for an MVP campaign. His opening three performances gave him the numbers to get noticed. The last two wins have added something useful to the argument: he can respond when the offense isn’t having everything its own way.

Against Denver, Purdy threw for 218 yards and two touchdowns as San Francisco pulled away after a 3-3 first half. The Seattle game was tougher. He finished with 189 passing yards, two touchdowns and an interception, but led two fourth-quarter scoring drives in a 32-29 win. The 49ers are now 5-0.

The Seattle performance can be seen as a pro or a con for Purdy's argument. It was easily his worst game statistically of the season, and the defense made huge plays to propel the win. Purdy didn't have his best stuff, but the team got it done against the defending champs. If the 49ers can win even when Brock is a little off his game, their record will reflect it. Also, when it mattered most, Purdy came through with scoring drives.

Answering a fourth-quarter deficit on the road against the defending champions matters. An MVP season isn’t going to be 17 afternoons of perfect passing. Being able to recover from a difficult stretch is part of the job.

The receiving group remains a concern. Ricky Pearsall, De’Zhaun Stribling, Demarcus Robinson and Christian Kirk are on injured reserve, while Deebo Samuel left the Seattle game with a hamstring injury. Mike Evans has also been playing through a rib injury. Purdy still has productive targets, but keeping the passing game going as that group changes would strengthen his individual case.

Seattle also ended his sack-free start, bringing him down three times. The protection has been a major advantage, but Sunday was a reminder that he won’t always have a clean pocket. How he handles more pressure, especially with receivers missing, will tell us plenty about whether this pace can last.

Josh Allen remains the closest threat at +300. Buffalo’s unbeaten start ended against New England in Week 4, and its Week 5 game against the Rams is still to come on Monday night. Allen has an immediate chance to answer Purdy’s latest win. His ability to produce touchdowns through the air and on the ground will keep him dangerous throughout this race.

Patrick Mahomes is next at +600, with Kansas City entering its Week 5 bye at 4-0. The Chiefs’ receiver injuries are worth watching, particularly Tyquan Thornton’s lengthy absence and Rashee Rice’s hamstring issue. Mahomes has a strong team record working for him, but keeping the offense productive with fewer options could become a bigger part of his case.

Trevor Lawrence has moved into the leading group at +750. He threw for 331 yards and two touchdowns as Jacksonville beat Philadelphia in London to reach 4-1. Joe Burrow, meanwhile, threw four touchdowns in Cincinnati’s win over Miami and sits at +950. Both are giving voters reasons to look beyond the familiar favorites.

Purdy has earned the early lead, but it’s a narrow one. Keeping the 49ers winning while his efficiency holds up would give him a serious shot. Five weeks in, calling him an MVP candidate isn't a debate anymore.
