Houston NHL Expansion Odds

Houston has an NFL team, an NBA team, and an MLB team. An NHL franchise would round out the collection, and there’s a serious effort underway to make it happen.

The catch? Houston isn’t the only Texas city being considered. The NHL is evaluating both Houston and Austin with a prospective ownership group led by billionaire Dan Friedkin. The league opened that process in June, putting a second Texas franchise firmly on the table.

Now, traders on Kalshi are weighing whether Houston will get an official expansion announcement before the calendar flips to 2027. That leaves a few months to settle a multibillion-dollar question. No pressure.

Why Houston Could Get the Nod Before 2027

This bid has moved beyond someone saying Houston would be a good hockey city.

The Friedkin family’s agreement with the NHL established a six-month evaluation process, with an estimated $3.5 billion investment covering the expansion fee and a new arena. Friedkin also brings sports ownership experience through AS Roma and Everton.

Houston was the original focus of the discussions before Austin entered the conversation. That doesn’t guarantee Houston wins, but it gives the city more substance behind its candidacy than a hopeful expansion wish list.

There’s also no territorial veto waiting up the road in Dallas. Bettman said the Stars don’t hold rights that would prevent the NHL from adding a franchise in either city. A Texas hockey rivalry would certainly give fans something else to argue about.

The timing offers a possible opening, too. The league’s next opportunity to formally update its governors on expansion is in December. My read: there’s still a path to a year-end announcement if the remaining work comes together, although an update alone wouldn’t settle this market.

Why Houston Might Not Get an NHL Team Before 2027

Austin could take the franchise Houston is chasing. The NHL and the Friedkin family are evaluating both cities, and the proposal requires a new arena in either location. Houston’s head start in the discussions doesn’t settle which market offers the better long-term deal.

The bigger concern for this market may be the clock. The September 22 Board of Governors meeting ended without an expansion decision or a timetable for a vote. Bettman said the league expected to know the ownership group’s preferred city by year’s end, but choosing Houston and officially awarding Houston a franchise are two separate steps.

Approval requires support from three-quarters of the governors, and Bettman has emphasized that the NHL isn’t working toward a fixed expansion deadline. A multibillion-dollar transaction takes some convincing, even when the potential expansion fee looks pretty appealing.

That leaves plenty of room for encouraging news that still isn’t enough for YES. Houston could become the preferred city, advance an arena proposal, and enter 2027 looking like a future NHL home. Without an official franchise award before the deadline, this market would still resolve as NO.
