Dylan Larkin Next Team Odds - Minnesota Jumps Into Contention

The Minnesota Wild have made a serious move in the Dylan Larkin next team odds. Detroit is still hanging on to the lead, but there isn’t much left.

At midnight on Sept. 29, Kalshi’s chart had the Red Wings at 70.5% and the Wild at 17.5%. Following reports that Minnesota and Larkin's camp shared mutual interest, Detroit dropped to 44%, and Minnesota climbed to 42%. A comfortable gap has become a near dead heat.

Detroit’s case is less about everything being fixed and more about the clock. This market has a November 1st deadline. If Larkin remains with the Red Wings until that point, then a 'Yes' trade on Detroit resolves as a win. 

He doesn’t need to withdraw his trade request or commit to spending the entire season there. Even Frank Seravelli's reporting that the Wild were a likely landing spot made it clear that this was "by Christmas."

That distinction matters given how unresolved this situation remains. Larkin returned to training camp after requesting a trade and losing the captaincy, but declined to say whether he wanted to stay in Detroit. Detroit's front office has maintained that Larkin could stay with the team all season, but this could also be simple posturing.

There’s a difference between an uncomfortable situation and one that has to be fixed immediately. With five seasons remaining on Larkin’s contract, Detroit isn’t facing an expiring deal that forces its hand. 

Given the fact that he reported for camp, Larkin could be a cooperative partner in finding a new home, not an adversary holding the team hostage until he's shipped off to Minnesota or elsewhere.

The Red Wings don’t need a happy ending to win this market. They just need the current stalemate to last another month.

Minnesota’s connection to Larkin predates this latest jump. The Wild were among the three teams he was initially reported to approve, alongside Florida and Vegas, who are no longer seen as contenders in the market. Minnesota has been searching for a first-line center, and there have been plenty of reports of mutual interest, so it makes sense that they would be the top external contender.

There still haven't been any reports that an agreement is close. Still, there’s more behind Minnesota’s position than traders picking a team out of a hat.

Getting the deal done is the harder part. Larkin carries an $8.7 million annual cap hit through 2030-31, and Minnesota doesn’t have the space to simply absorb it as things currently stand. The salary number was already the factor that virtually pushed Florida, Vegas, and Dallas out of the Larkin sweepstakes. 

Adding a top-line center sounds great until the conversation turns to who has to leave. The Wild need a package that satisfies Detroit without giving back so much that it undermines the point of acquiring Larkin.

Minnesota’s rise makes this worth watching, and where there's this much smoke, there's usually fire. It's far from guaranteed, though.

Philadelphia and Montreal are the next notable names on the board, at 6% and 3%, respectively. Still, we’d be careful about getting your hopes up if your a Flyers or Habs fan.

The Flyers previously inquired about Larkin and were told they weren’t among his acceptable destinations, while it has been speculated that no Canadian teams are on Larkin’s list. With full no-movement protection, his willingness to go somewhere matters more than its appearance on a betting board.

The more interesting development is the expansion of his reported list. It's been reported that Larkin could expand his list up to eight teams, including Colorado, Washington, Dallas, and Tampa Bay.

That gives Detroit more potential conversations, but still no easy move. The cap hit and asset cost still make a deal tricky.

For now, Minnesota should be considered the favorite if a deal is done by November, but it's just as likely Larkin stays put for the first half of the season.
